Jesus is the Light

John 8:12
12 Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.(KJV)
Did you know light existed before God said let there be light? How could that be? Well, when God stated in Genesis 1:3 “Let there be light..”, God was referring to physical light--light we can see with our eyes. For God Himself is light in the first place and Jesus always has been also, so this was a another kind of light that God was referring to in Gen 1:3. If you have doubts of that, take a look at John 1:1 where it says in the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God and the Word was God. Also, in
Col 1:16
16 For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him: (KJV) {This verse is referring to Jesus-you see that in the previous verses of Colossians}
So it was Jesus and the Father and the Holy Spirit, who are one, who said, “Let there be light…”
So in Gen 1:3 our triune God brought light into existence that we are able to see with our physical eyes.
And we find that light is used symbolically of Jesus all throughout scripture.
What does light do for us? Well it reveals the route we need to take. How do we get the light of Jesus?
It comes with salvation and communication with God. When you receive His Holy Spirit into you, you have the teacher of the Truth residing in you and He reveals the truths about God and you to you. Before the Holy Spirit moved into people, He walked alongside people many times. We see that truth displayed in the life of Abraham. The Holy Spirit revealed much of God and His will to Abraham through out his life. And notice as Abraham lived by faith-it was a step at a time, wasn’t it? Think about the people of Israel.
Exod 13:21
21 And the LORD went before them by day in a pillar of a cloud, to lead them the way; and by night in a pillar of fire, to give them light; to go by day and night: (KJV)
They were led by God by means of a visible pillar of smoke and a visible pillar of fire by night. And when that pillar moved, they moved. When it stopped, they stopped. They did not try going around it and go ahead of it. They would have gotten lost, for they had never been to Palestine before and had no road map.
That is an obvious example of light showing the way somewhere. Here is another example which comes from current activities. My husband’s mother’s side of his family were coal miners by trade and when his grandfather would come home from the mines, he would be wearing his coal miner’s hat. That hat is designed for two major functions. One-it being a hard hat, protects the head from falling rock , the other part of the hat is a lamp placed right in front on the hat to light the way in the mine so they could see where they walked and would not stumble. That is a great definition of your helmet of salvation. It gives protection and enables you to see where you are going spiritually.
For us God’s Word, Jesus’ life, death, resurrection, and the Holy Spirit inside us are our light and guide for living in this life and being prepared for the next. Are you using the light God has given you? Are you letting it guide you?
